Sadly, a clogged toilet is a pain in the neck that happens all too often in many Austin residence. Luckily, clearing a clogged toilet with a flanged plunger is one plumbing task that practically every DIY handyman can manage.
Almost every toilet clog is caused by a foreign object stuck in the toilet trap and not in the drain pipe. This can range from someone accidentally using too much toilet paper. To the extreme case of your kids flushing something like a tennis ball down the drain.
Supplies Needed
- Flanged rubber plunger - this type of plunger has a flange on the end. It is designed specifically to fit toilet drain outlets.
- Rubber gloves - make no mistakes we are working with waste, which tends to make this a messy job.
Instructions
- Put on your rubber gloves to protect yourself from the waste water.
- Check the water level of the toilet, by sticking in the plunger and ensuring there is enough water to cover half of the flange. Remember the plunger flange is the part on the very end, that is designed to fit into the drain outlet. If there isn't enough water to cover the flange halfway add some.
- Position the flange directly over the drain outlet and push down, which will create a seal.
- Rapidly and repeating move the plunger up and down, being careful not to slosh the water out of the bowl. If the water begins to drain, then you have successfully unclogged the toilet.
The best way to start clearing a clogged toilet is with a flanged plunger. If you have tried to above technique, and the clog refuses to budge. It would be wise to move onto a more powerful air operated plunger. Finally if the air assisted plunger fails, use an auger, before you call a professional plumber.
