Choosing A Undermount Sink
Stainless steel undermount sinks
offer a modern, clean look while
also offering the benefit of a
hygienic workspace. Undermount sinks
do not suffer the same failings as
drop-in sinks where food and grime
collect under their rim. Combined
with the durability of stainless
steel, these sinks are a winning
combination.
Stainless steel sinks are available
in 16, 18 and 20-gauge stainless
steel. The lavatory bowls are
usually made from 20-gauge stainless
steel while kitchen, utility and bar
sinks are made with the heavier
duty, more durable 16 and 18-gauge
stainless steel. Higher quality
stainless steel undermount sinks
will have a 15 gauge rim and 16
gauge bowl. The 16-gauge stainless
steel is the most durable and is
less prone to dents as well as
showing water spots and scratches.
All stainless steel sinks are 10
percent nickel, which makes the
surface more resistant to scratches
and less likely to show signs of
wear and tear than a mirrored
finish.
Sinks can range in size and design.
Stainless steel sinks are most
commonly found as single or double
bowls. Triple bowl stainless steel
undermount sinks are available but
harder to locate. The most common
sink size available on the market is
22 by 33 inches. These sinks range
in depth from 12 to 22 inches and
the width ranging from 15 to 33
inches. Bowl depths range from 5 to
9 inches. If the desired sink sizes
are not available for double or
triple bowl sinks, the sinks can be
bought as single and double bowls
and combined to make customized
double and triple stainless steel
undermount sinks. Drain locations
are located either in the back or
center of the sink for all single
sinks and at the back of the sink
for all double stainless steel
sinks. Accessories such as grates
and drain strainers are available.
Due to the risk of water damage to
countertops, undermount sinks models
should only be installed under
granite countertops, concrete
countertops or other solid surface
countertops such as Caesar Stone,
Corian, Avonite or Fountainhead,
Silestone and Quartz engineered
stone. For best results, undermount
sinks should be installed by a
professional.
Up Coming Trends
Homeowners are now applying more
traditional and trendy styles to a
stainless steel application such as
textured bathroom sinks, farmhouse
sinks, apron sinks, vessel sinks and
wall hung sinks. Some designers are
even including commercial stainless
steel sinks into homes.
